Following the design of SimpliSafe’s lock, I was asked to create a low-cost, outdoor-mounted accessory keypad to unlock the door.

My design research included long walks through the neighborhoods of Boston and Cambridge, MA, areas filled with multi-family “triple-deckers” that offered rich inspiration. One key insight emerged: designers in this space often lacked an understanding of house siding and wood trim dimensions, as evidenced by products that awkwardly hung off buildings with a sloppy fit.

With these constraints in mind, alongside battery life requirements, I explored a range of forms featuring different battery configurations and keypad layouts. Ultimately, I developed a suite of physical and digital prototypes to evaluate the interaction design and build confidence in a final direction.

The result is a keypad that accommodates a wide variety of housing materials and dimensions, offering a clean, considered installed appearance for homeowners while aligning with the design language of the broader SimpliSafe product portfolio.

Design research walks in and around Boston highlighted key dimensional challenges for building-mounted products.

A comprehensive suite of interactive digital and physical prototypes enabled us to explore and evaluate each design direction prior to production through hands-on experience.
