SimpliSafe is a home security company offering professional monitoring service and self-installed hardware. I partnered with SimpliSafe to design the company’s first smart lock.
I found through design research with users that maintaining the traditional proportions and materials of a deadbolt could help us make smart locks intuitive for all users, not just the tech-forward homeowner. Through physical prototyping at scale, I developed a novel engineering architecture to maintain proportions and remain cost effective. Backed by SimpliSafe's innovative engineering team, this enabled us to design what would become the thinnest smart lock on the market.
Simplisafe launched the smart lock in August 2018 with impressive sales and reviews, including this one from PC Magazine, “The smart lock Apple would have designed.”
The challenge in developing the lock architecture was integrating the required battery volume while maintaining the proportions of a standard deadbolt thumbturn. I started with the thumbturn design, and developed a strategy to offset the batteries, electronics and LED's.
