About

Wolos Studio is a creative office with an expertise in industrial design and engineering of physical products. Established in 2017 by Greg Wolos, I use a human centered approach to create products and experiences that are desireable, feasible and viable.

My work is holistic across design disciplines and industry agnostic. I typically work with one client at a time to allow me to go very deep in the market and the user, often changing my personal routine to become an expert quickly.

Location

My studio and workshop is located in Boulder, CO. I work with both national and global clients from my base here. Design research often occurs in locations across the US based on project and client needs.

My Approach

Human Centered
I always start with people, and have developed a unique approach to deliver feasibility (is it possible to make?) and viability (does it make business sense?) on top of desirability (do people want it?).
Industry Agnostic
I work across industries and welcome the opportunity to explore new ones. Cross industry expertise means I can leverage themes, inspiration and best practices from spaces you or your team may not have considered.
One Client at a Time
I've found the best quality work is produced when partnering with one client at a time. This focus allows me to go very deep in the market and with the user. It creates the time and space needed to explore freely, while considering and incorporating the often-complex constraints of a project.
Informed Intuition
My work is combination of designer's intuition and in-person design research. I carefully balance insights and inspiration gathered from user-research with my own experience and point-of-view. This helps me create imaginative ideas that are grounded in user needs and desires.
Distilling Complex Systems
I have a deep engineering and manufacturing background. This allows me to understand, and then design for, complex systems. It also makes me uniquely qualified to create product visions that are actually possible in production.
Deep Immersion in the Subject
I complement design research with users by immersing myself in the subject matter and the market. This often involves changing my personal routines and the routines of my family to quickly become a user. This helps me develop deeper empathy for user pain points, desires, and potential solutions.
Holistic Design
Although my core discipline is industrial design, you can thonk of me more as a creative director specializng in hardware experience. Often, my deliverables span industrial design, interaction design, mechanical engineering, visual identity and brand strategy.
Engineer to Feel
I use my deep expertise in physical and digital engineering to bring concepts to life early. The goal isn't to start production design early. Rather, this approach helps me feel what a concept is actually like, and helps inspire and inform foundational design decisions before you've ever invested in production design.
Build to Think
My design process relies heavily on a combination of digital and physical prototyping. Throughout projects, I use technology to speed up my prototyping processes and I use traditional, manual prototyping methods to help me slow down and experience the concept. It's not uncommon for me to make hundreds of different prototypes during a project to help answer design questions.

My Background

I'm an industrial designer, mechanical engineer, and interaction designer. As a multi-disciplinary designer, I enjoy working on holistic design problems that navigate the physical and digital worlds. I have over 20 years of experience and have worked with clients across a breadth of industries including consumer electronics, wearables, industrial products, food & beverage, medical devices, healthcare, transportation and global logistics.

Prior to founding my own studio, I was Design Director at IDEO where I spent ~7 years working globally with clients across many industries. I led creative teams that included brand, industrial design, interaction design, and user research. An expert in practicing Human Centered Design, I also taught clients this process.

Prior to IDEO, I held positions at W. L. Gore & Associates and the Boeing Company. My work at W. L. Gore & Associates focused on designing and launching high-volume, industrial technology products. My work at The Boeing Company was in Structures Engineering and focused on stress analysis of composite structures for the 777 and 747. I hold a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Colorado, and an MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Delaware. I've lectured on design and engineering at the Harvard Graduate School of Design, MIT, and the University of Virginia.
